ZOOM House residents set personal and family goals that are unique to their own challenges and dreams. Many are new to stable housing and find success in paying bills on time or managing their mental and physical healthcare needs. Some are pursuing educational, employment, and childcare goals. Our residents are proud of their successes and we encourage their courage and follow-through with services and opportunities that support them as whole people and families. Below are a few examples of some recent resident success stories:
Success Stories – Starting Strong
A young mother at ZOOM House has been reluctant to enroll her daughter in childcare, but dreams of continuing her education. In her own time, she began visiting childcares and colleges in the area to get a sense of her options and to ask questions. This month she decided to enroll at MCTC and has secured childcare for her daughter right across the street from school! She’s proud of herself for following through and is now focused on choosing a program that interests her.
Success Stories – For the Sake of the Good
Two new residents were on poor terms stemming from many personal disagreements. One of the residents asked a ZOOM House staff member to facilitate a conversation for the sake of conflict resolution. Even though the issues were serious, this resident trusted the staff to get involved for the sake of a healthy solution. She added, “My goal is that we can get through this and both keep our housing here at ZOOM.”
Sticking to a Budget
When a new ZOOM House resident learned of the food shelf next door at Zion Lutheran Church, she was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. “You mean I can come four times a month? And you have diapers?” She worked with a ZOOM House staff member to develop a monthly grocery and hygiene budget and, thanks to the ZOOM House food shelf, she’s been sticking to it. Your donations to the food shelf help residents keep their apartments clean, cook healthy meals, and even stay within a monthly expense budget. What a good gift!
